The commentary runs through the history of the company, from its beginnings in Bradford on to Idle just outside Bradford, and the factory is shown from the air and in some early photos. The film then shows a variety of models of Jowett cars making their way to the Rally at Saltaire form as far away as Switzerland and Holland. These include pre-wars, Bradfords, Javelins and Jupiters. The film then gives an overview of Saltaire, showing cars arriving on a rainy day at Salts Mill. The cars park lined up in the grounds of the mill. The organisers are on hand to direct the cars to be parked up according to model of car. As the driver arrives he is stopped and questioned about the car by two policemen who ask him why there is no seatbelt, with one of the policemen smiling at the mock interrogation. He finally backs his car into place alongside a long row of Javelins, some of which are shown in close up.

Here ‘Modified Hall’ No Haroldstone Hall brings an eastbound train into Castle Cary station in the early 50’s; this 8-car semi-fast is possibly the 1. Just visible beyond the station is the divergence of the line to Yeovil and Weymouth which curves left whilst the cut-off line to Cogload and Taunton continues straight ahead beneath the A road bridge. Several buildings and business premises were badly damaged but the railway was up and running again by 11pm that same evening. During a six week period, four separate bombing raids were carried out on Templecombe, Somerton and Chard Junction; the signal box at Castle Cary was totally destroyed and a temporary box was hastily assembled at the GWR’s signal works at Reading and installed at the junction two days later; this was later replaced by a brick-built box on 27 October, by which time repairs to the track had been completed and the GWR’s train services fully restored.

During World War 2 Castle Cary was considered by the military to be a strategic railway junction serving the large naval base at Weymouth, however fast-forward to the present day, and Castle Cary station has come under siege in a quite different way.

A most appropriate subject for the large number of members who were in attendance. The programme began by moving northward through the Lake District depicting steam related images over the WCML and on the branch lines that radiate from the main line. Carnforth, Morecambe and Lancaster were very prominent as was Preston where diversions along the Ribble Valley Railway and the route to Blackpool served to provide more levels of interest. So too were the dying days of steam at Lostock Hall and Rose Grove sheds.

East Lancashire principally yielded freight movements over Copy Pit, most of which were from the final phases of mainline steam activities. A tour of Manchester and the sheds of Lancashire completed this interesting section of the talk. Local lines which were illustrated took the audience along the lines from Bradley Junction to Sheffield plus that from Skipton to Grassington quarry.

Each of the two Bradford stations, together with photographs taken at Sowerby Bridge and Todmorden, revived the memories of the dying days of steam. The preserved railways of the Worth Valley and Middleton were to be seen in and amongst the presentation. Steve is a superb restorer of archived photographs many of which date back to the early days of railway photography and yet again this proved to be the case. On this occasion the material on show was specifically focussed on the Midland Railway comprising of top quality images, chiefly in black and white, dating from as far back as through to the end of steam.

Initially commencing at London St Pancras the taken route moved northwards depicting action at the southern-most Midland motive power depots of Kentish Town and Cricklewood and stations along the way towards Derby via Northampton and Rugby. The works and depot at Derby were extensively portrayed. The broad spread of years across the presentation enabled almost every class of Midland locomotive to be seen.

Astor even enjoyed repeating her famous riposte under cross-examination in court when Ward was on trial for living off immoral earnings and she was told that Lord Astor denied sleeping with her. It was all so long ago that there is no longer rancour or blame, merely a sense of detached amusement derived from looking back at earth-shattering events from another age. Even the pillow-talk scare about nuclear secrets has been totally discounted.

So who on earth, blessed with such longevity, still needs to be protected, and why? He died several days later.

History[ edit ] In August , the Department for Transport announced that Abellio , Arriva and Govia had been shortlisted to bid for the next Northern franchise. Graph generated from published period performance data by Arriva Rail North. Punctuality was particularly bad in the North West due to the delay in the Blackpool-Preston electrification scheme and the number of trains per hour through Manchester increased with more services through the Ordsall Chord. Network Rail only informed train operating companies in January that the electrification scheme would be delayed until November – Northern had planned for the scheme to be complete as scheduled by May and had trained drivers to operate new routes with electric rolling stock.

Consequently, an alternative timetable had to be drafted up and many train drivers were not sufficiently trained to drive the existing diesel rolling stock which resulted in widespread cancellations. Of the twenty two train operating companies in the United Kingdom to record a fall in passengers, Northern were one of only three franchises to record an annual drop in passenger numbers in

Hadrian’s Wall (Latin: Vallum Aelium), also called the Roman Wall, Picts’ Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD in the reign of the emperor Hadrian.

It was a twin-cylinder two-stroke, fitted to a Premier bicycle. It was mounted in front of the headstock and the front wheel was belt driven. It was a typical primitive with rigid forks and belt drive. Although the claim was made that they produced the engine themselves, it was probably bought in. This clever design remained unchanged for many years.

He arranged for the design to be manufactured by the Jowett brothers, but they built only six machines before alternative arrangements were made in Bradford to create the Scott Engineering Co. During that year Scott raced successfully at several hill climbs. Due to its style and the fact that it was easy to start, the motorcycle attracted a lot of attention.

The machines had kickstarts and an increased capacity. The engine became fully water-cooled and the capacity was enlarged to cc.

The Parthian Empire at its Greatest Extent c. Parthian and Roman envoys met to establish this landmark as the boundary between the two superpowers. At this first meeting, the Roman magistrate reportedly seized the seat of honour, humiliating his Parthian counterpart as the inferior ambassador. The archer on Parthian coins not only represented the military might of the Parthians, but also their Iranian character.

Trousers were considered effeminate clothing in the Roman world; however the folds of material shown on the coins as horizontal lines prevented saddle chaffing.

Scott built motorcycles from to The Scott Motor Cycle Company of Saltaire, Yorkshire and was a well known producer of motorcycles and light engines for industry. The company was founded by Alfred Angas Scott.

The owner of a newly-imported Russian Mi-2 helicopter has had his aircraft grounded at California’s Hayward Airport while the FAA looks into allegations that he flew it without an Airworthiness Certificate and without locally-required insurance documents. Officials in Oakland, California, where pilot Thierry Thys was based, asked him for the documents, but when he couldn’t produce them and later flew the Mi-2 to nearby Hayward , the FAA was notified.

The pilot was not injured, and damage to the aircraft was relatively minor. The jet’s right wing tip struck the runway and started a small fire on the wing, which then started a grass fire at the airport. The aircraft suffered an unknown amount of damage. Both occupants were fatally injured, one of whom was the aircraft owner. The pilots were flying from Georgia to New Mexico, where the owner lived. The Government of Nigeria has ordered the sale of over out-of-service and abandoned aircraft from around that country.

It is not known what aircraft types are involved, but since at least some of the aircraft are rumored to have been dormant for many years, warbird- and vintage-aircraft collectors are scrambling to research the matter. The reporter was riding along as part of an interview he was conducting for a story on the pilot. Helicopter pilots Charlie Hollinger and Jack Kelly have begun the formation of a worldwide association dedicated to the Bell Model 47 helicopter, a versatile workhorse which has been in service for 50 years.

Accident investigators at the site of last month’s Aero Vodochody L Albatros crash near Denver, Colorado, USA, have reported that the rear-seat occupant of the aircraft may have jettisoned the canopy, either accidentally or intentionally. Since the aircraft was equipped with a self-destruct system, police were forced to close a nearby highway for several hours while an explosives-disposal team examined the site for unexploded charges in the aircraft.

US officials have asked China’s permission to examine the wreckage of two recently-discovered aircraft crash sites in the Lang Gong region of Tibet.

Each and every one of us will have at one time or another experienced the ebb and flow in our passion for trains and railways, whether it be an allegiance to steam or a penchant for more modern diesel and electric traction…in essence, the appeal of trains frequently comes and goes, but it never leaves us entirely. Terry’s fascination with trains began in the West Riding of Yorkshire during the s when the majority of small boys shared a passion for train spotting.

It started off as a relatively simple hobby at first, little morethan jotting down a few engine numbers at his local station at Saltaire near Shipley until it dawned on him that spotting the same old engines time and time again was a fruitless exercise and a wider search began in earnest. His parents were badgered for permission to travel further afield, but wisely no mention was made of the hairy escapades his trips involved, often pedalling mile upon mile on push bikes to faraway places and climbing over perimeter walls to gain access to engine sheds.

The noble Lord Wallace of Saltaire said: An internal inquiry into what was alleged to have happened concluded that there was broadly credible evidence dating back several years of behaviour that violated the personal space and autonomy of the complainants. the superficial nature of investigations and the speed at which some cases move.

In the second map from the same collection I have hatched the buildings concerned to place them in a more general view of this part of Bradford in the years The creation of new thoroughfares, and extensive building redevelopment, results in a very different street pattern today. In this third image you may just be able to make out the design on the tavern sign.

Neither drawing nor plans can be later than by which time the inn was no longer in existence, but it is likely that they are approximately contemporary. These features are replicated in the plan, so there really can be little doubt that we are looking at a single building. Scruton says that at one time in front of this inn was a ring for bull-baiting, which presumably provided its name.

Close-by was the town pillory in which offenders were manacled while being subject to the abuse of passers-by who could hurl eggs or fruit at them.

Dimensions[ edit ] Hadrian’s Wall was 80 Roman miles or East of the River Irthing , the wall was made from squared stone and measured 3 metres 10 feet wide and 5 to 6 metres 16 to 20 feet high, while west of the river the wall was originally made from turf and measured 6 metres 20 feet wide and 3. These dimensions do not include the wall’s ditches, berms and forts.

The central section measured eight Roman feet wide 7. Immediately south of the wall, a large ditch was dug, with adjoining parallel mounds, one on either side. This is known today as the Vallum , even though the word Vallum in Latin is the origin of the English word wall, and does not refer to a ditch. In many places — for example Limestone Corner — the Vallum is better preserved than the wall, which has been robbed of much of its stone. Route[ edit ] Route of Hadrian’s Wall Sections of Hadrian’s Wall remain along the route, though much has been dismantled over the years to use the stones for various nearby construction projects.
