Archaeologists in search of cultural identity of Qahavand Tehran, Nov 19, IRNA – Exploration operations were conducted on the hill in the city of Dashteh in Qahavand, Hamedan Province, where works dating back to the first millennium BC have been discovered, with the purpose of determining the limits, proposing the privacy and obtaining basic information in line with the cultural identity of the city of Qahavand. The Public Relations Office of the Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and Tourism RICHT quoted the head of the archeology team, Hamid Karimi, as saying that ancient hills in Iran have always been plundered by the traffickers of antiquities while some other have become the shelter to the homeless people and drug addicts. Referring to the fact that Hamedan Province and its plains are very rich in embodying the ancient hills, the head of the archeology team noted that protecting and preserving such national heritage is being considered an important issue. The archeologist pointed out that in order to reach the main goal of the probing project in Tappeh Dashteh which was to determine the limits and propose its privacy, 12 boreholes were made none of which contained a layer or cultural deposits. He went on to say that by examining the layers and the data of the boreholes, it was found out that the hill had a conical shape with no extension to the surrounding sides and the works and the centralized layers are within its current limit, and all the boreholes are in fact within its privacy. Further elaborating on the periodization of the artifacts and clay works obtained from the boreholes, Karimi said the clay works discovered in the boreholes mainly belonged to the Parthian and Sassanid periods, the chamotte all of which, except for one piece, mineral and well baked in the color spectrum of dark beige and red and all the decorations used in the clay works are of the compression and groove type. He noted that clay works from the Islamic era as well as the Iron Age 3 are seen among the pottery which is indicative of the cultural sequence in the area. He said given the relatively high altitude of the site and observation of adobes and adobe structure on the surface, it seems that the enclosure includes a massive adobe structure probably in relation to military fortifications.

Clogged with traffic and choked with smog, it’s not the most immediately inviting of Iran’s cities – no spellbinding mosques, rose gardens or ancient ruins – but visitors will find more on offer the closer they look. Panorama of Tehran with the Milad Tower, Iran From ancient artefacts to modern art, Qurans to carpets, Tehran is home to the best of Iran’s museums and galleries.
And though it doesn’t have the long, illustrious history of Isfahan or Shiraz , Tehran is where to discover more about Iran’s 20th century upheavals, from the tarnished grandeur of the Pahlavi palaces to the countless fading murals in praise of Khomeini and the Iraq War martyrs. But history also demands that life goes on. In recent weeks, at least six women have been photographed standing silently on the streets of Tehran and Isfahan, holding out headscarves. The protests were inspired by Vida Movahed, 31, who was detained for a month after she removed her hijab during an anti-regime protest in December. Activist Masih Alinejad said the protesters are not anti-hijab, but anti-compulsion.
Police said this month they would no longer enforce the hijab requirement, but at least two of the protesters have been arrested in the past week. The woman – whose name remains unknown – became the face of protests in the country in December, and images of her were widely shared on social media. Lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh now says she has seen an official dossier that shows the woman has been released. Iranian officials have so far made no public comments on the issue.
She was referring to the avenue where the woman took off her headscarf – a punishable offence in Iran. The lawyer said she had gone to the prosecutor’s office to follow up the woman’s case and had learnt of her release the previous day. She has been the subject of a social media campaign in Iran, following the anti-establishment protests at the end of last year in which at least 20 people died. According to the archeologist, exploration in the aforementioned hill led to the discovery of works most likely dating back to early Islamic period, Seljuk era in particular. He further remarked that with the boreholes made in the area, specific clay works and glass objects as well as works in the form of detritus were discovered.
