The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders revision IV DSM-IV describes passive-aggressive personality disorder as a “pervasive pattern of negativistic attitudes and passive resistance to demands for adequate performance in social and occupational situations. Personality disorder includes deviation in affectivity, cognition, control over impulses and need for gratification, ways of perceiving and thinking, and inflexible, maladaptive, or otherwise dysfunctional behaviour. There must be personal distress attributable to such behaviour. Deviation must be stable and of long duration. Concept in different areas[ edit ] Psychology[ edit ] In psychology, passive-aggressive behavior is characterized by a habitual pattern of non-active resistance to expected work requirements, opposition, sullenness, stubbornness, and negative attitudes in response to requirements for normal performance levels expected by others. Most frequently it occurs in the workplace, where resistance is exhibited by indirect behaviors as procrastination, forgetfulness , and purposeful inefficiency, especially in reaction to demands by authority figures , but it can also occur in interpersonal contexts.

Now, two more key papers in the psychology have failed the reproducibility test, serving as an important reminder that many of the scientific ‘facts’ we’ve come to believe aren’t necessarily as steadfast as we thought. To be fair, just because findings can’t be reproduced, it doesn’t automatically mean they’re wrong. Replication is an important part of the scientific method that helps us nut out what’s really going on – it could be that the new researchers did something differently, or that the trend is more subtle than originally thought.

Because of this, behavioral therapy tends to be highly focused. The behavior itself is the problem and the goal is to teach clients new behaviors to minimize or eliminate the issue. Old learning led to the development of a problem and so the idea is that new learning can fix it.

So I did ten times more work. This weight of embarrassment came over me, and I felt like I was sweating from my spine out. Maybe not at the time but after some reflection. I never feel like a failure just because something I tried has failed. Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. But the secret is learning from the loss, and realizing that none of those holes are vacuums.

The Problems With Generic Medications Go Deeper Than One Company

Granted, those are women sharing their experiences, however to be fair, men are experiencing a lot of this as well. Do you find yourself, much like Alice In Wonderland, attempting to peer into or jump through the looking glass, desperate for answers, while the man in your life seems to care less? I get a lot of questions posed to me from the post referenced above. When men behave peculiar towards women, women have a tendency to blame themselves.

This is not Prince Charming gals, this is a man waving a giant red flag in your face. How could he be?

Well-Being Believe it or not, the Internet did not give rise to procrastination. People have struggled with habitual hesitation going back to ancient civilizations. The Greek poet Hesiod, writing around B. He was looking at you, Marcus Antonius. And those are just examples from recorded history. For all we know, the dinosaurs saw the meteorite coming and went back to their game of Angry Pterodactyls.

In research settings, people who procrastinate have higher levels of stress and lower well-being. In the real world, undesired delay is often associated with inadequate retirement savings and missed medical visits. In the past 20 years, the peculiar behavior of procrastination has received a burst of empirical interest. True procrastination is a complicated failure of self-regulation: A poor concept of time may exacerbate the problem, but an inability to manage emotions seems to be its very foundation.

Two More Classic Psychology Studies Just Failed The Reproducibility Test

November, Expressing thanks may be one of the simplest ways to feel better. The Thanksgiving holiday began, as the name implies, when the colonists gave thanks for their survival and for a good harvest. So perhaps November is a good time to review the mental health benefits of gratitude — and to consider some advice about how to cultivate this state of mind. The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness depending on the context.

In some ways gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible.

Prerequisite One semester of statistics or microeconomics. Requirements that this course meets. This course counts toward the psychology major and is an option to meet a requirement for the PPE major.I do emphasize applications to public policy, as well as medical decision making.

It is as the saying goes: Identifying the problem is half of the solution. Break a sweat There is an avalanche of research on the benefits of exercising for the body and the mind. The latest research tells us that if you want to put your mind in the best possible focus shape, a minute jog will do the job better than 15 minutes of relaxation and meditation.

According to recent research,[6] we all have a specific purpose-seeking style—similar to our own way of writing, dancing or speaking. The prosocial approach to finding meaning, though, which is based on kindness and compassion towards ourselves and others, is the best one in the long-run—it was shown to lead to greater caring, integrity and personal growth. You will have an internal motivation to keep going despite setbacks, despite the stress or the tiredness you may experience at times.

So, find what thrills you and makes you come alive and strive to become better, the best even, at it. The more progress you make, the more confidence you will have that you can apply the same passion and dedication to all other parts of your life that feel stagnant. Small things as daily reminders in terms of micro-goals you can set on your phone, for instance, can have a profound favorable effect on becoming unstuck.

Nudging can also help overcome some of these personality traits we talked about—like passiveness or acute proneness to procrastination. Seek different experiences Even if you are in a happy relationship, you may still feel stuck—i.

By Christopher Goffard May 23, 7: On Tuesday, however, a year veteran of the department testified that he did not know whether anyone in the department had gone through 68 banker’s boxes worth of files — including informant-related material — dating from the s. Andrew Stephens testified that he took possession of the boxes — each containing files — in late , when he took over the jail’s Custody Intelligence Unit, which handles informants.

True procrastination is a complicated failure of self-regulation: experts define it as the voluntary delay of some important task that we intend to do, despite knowing that we’ll suffer as a result.

In the late s, psychologist Martin Seligman conducted a series of behavioural experiments with dogs. He electrically shocked them at random and observed their responses. After being locked in cages and subjected to pain that was unpredictable and uncontrollable, the dogs eventually gave up their attempts to escape, even when their cage doors were opened. This new theory was incredibly attractive. It neatly and conveniently located the problem in the victims of violence, and manipulated their reality-based perceptions of a toxic and life-threatening environment.

This includes, most notably, women subjected to domestic violence. Like the slippery concepts of low self-esteem, Stockholm syndrome, co-dependence or traumatic bonding, learned helplessness has entered our vernacular. It has swallowed up socially accurate explanations for violence, until nothing is left but to blame the victim.

Last year, clinical psychologist Sallee McLaren argued half the responsibility for domestic violence lies with the victim. But unfortunately for women seeking therapeutic support, in order to survive and escape domestic violence, therapists of all persuasions have been specifically trained to locate the problem in their clients. Dr McLaren is no exception in a profession that continues to focus research on the individual attributes of victims of violence, and to pitch their therapeutic techniques towards victim responsibility.

Therapists working to support women in situations of domestic violence need to move outside of individual psychology and away from therapy.

Sometimes I make recommendations. Some people respond by telling me about a success they have had; but the greater number of comments argue against my suggestions, and against the prospect of dating altogether. What has struck me reading these remarks is how angry and bitter they are.

The Observer asked a random sample of APS leaders, of various career levels and nationalities, to tell us what they consider to be the most replicated or durable finding in psychological science. But contributors identified a breadth of other work that they believe serve as a reliable foundation for psychological research. We invite readers to share their own thoughts about findings that have stood strong over time.

Write us at apsobserver psychologicalscience. This special feature in the Observer highlights fundamental and reliable contributions of our science that were identified by some APS members. I will frame a few as general themes: For example, humans hear sounds between roughly 20 Hz and 20 kHz, with a sweet spot around 3 kHz.

People act toward the products of perception. Returning to the sense of hearing for an example, people tend to misperceive sounds as nearer than their actual source locations, so in the absence of corrective feedback, they will fall short when walking to auditory targets. Conversely, people act to create products of perception.

Funny enough, though, most patrons are unaware of Food With Integrity. In a Business Week interview , founder and CEO Steve Ells estimated that only 5 percent of customers know anything about the campaign. Finding sustainable sources for food in each region can be difficult.

Addiction is the most severe form of a full spectrum of substance use disorders, and is a medical illness caused by repeated misuse of a substance or substances. Recurrent use of the substance results in a failure to fulfill major role obligations at work, school, or home.

There is much debate as to who suffers more after a break up – the dumper or the dumpee? After much consideration, study and research on the subject, it could just be that the pain involved is not what affects the ultimate outcome. And I believe it depends on the reason for the dump. As a result, I believe the woman, the dumper here, would be very open to a return from the man to reignite the relationship unless he cheated.

So if the dumpee, the man, returns to make amends, I believe he will have an increased success rate of actually repairing things and making amends, as long as his intentions are genuine, he apologizes, becomes accountable for his actions and shows the woman the respect she deserves. In this case, I believe the dumper is hurting more than the dumpee. Woman Disrespects or Disappoints The Man In this scenario, we have a couple of additional dynamics involved when compared to the situation above.

And those would be 1 male ego and 2 male pride. These can complicate things and create a very different outcome. If a man feels embarrassed pride and emasculated ego by the woman and he dumps her as a result, he will be very hurt and the chances of him returning to reignite the relationship are decreased. As a result, I believe the man here would be less likely to return to reignite the relationship. In this case, I believe the dumpee is hurting more than the dumper.
