Posted by Nick Russell at The largest area of coastal sand dunes in North America, some as high as feet above sea level, the Oregon Dunes begin at Coos Bay and extend north to Florence. In the process the rock was ground into the sand that created the dunes we see today. The dunes are ever-changing as the forces of wind, water, and erosion constantly affect them. In some places the dunes extend well over two miles inland.

Author Frank Herbert said the stark landscape was part of the inspiration for his popular science fiction novel Dune. One of the most popular activities at the dunes is ATV riding, and during the summer they are busy with people on three wheelers, quads, and dirt bikes. The highest and most dramatic dunes are located in the Umpqua Riding area. Off road vehicles cannot travel directly between these three areas.

Strict rules are in place to protect the environment, riders, and other dunes visitors. Large areas are off limits to motorized vehicles and are popular with surf fishermen, hikers, birdwatchers, and picnickers. Several wheelchair accessible sites make the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area available to all visitors.

They feature primitive campgrounds, sites with various amenities, yurts that feel like home away from home in a Genghis Kahn kind of way or full electrical sites that come with cable TV hookups where you can take in the pleasures of The Sopranos reruns or the new Dr. This guide to Oregon coast campgrounds features all state, county and U.

Forest Service campsites between Warrenton and Florence — some miles worth. There are full hook-up sites, about with water and power, approximately 19 tent sites, various RV sites as well as 15 yurts. Hot showers and full restrooms add to the outdoor pleasures here.

Sun Rocks RV Resort, located in Prineville, Oregon. Sun Rocks is a family oriented park surrounded by mountains in a very natural setting. The facilities are very well kept. Clean restrooms, camping cabins, full hookup rv spaces, tent sites, and a very nice clubhouse for rent.

The park is located in a busy commercial area so there is some background traffic noise. There seem to be many long term residents but there is a restriction on the age of RVs that are there permanently so everything is in good shape. Very neat, clean and well kept. Staff is friendly, knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. All sites, both pull-through and back-ins have level concrete pads and a sturdy picnic table. There’s also a metal stand to set your portable BBQ on so you don’t have to use the picnic table as a base.

Each site is surrounded by grass, shrubs and a tree. The trees are not so big that you feel like you’re in a forest and with the grass on two sides, there’s a nice, open feeling about the park. Sites are long enough for big rigs; although it may take some some judicious spotting of your rig to have enough room for your tow vehicle.

Interior roads are asphalt with some corners that are a little tight Restrooms were equally clean and bright.

We do occasionally drop down to below freezing and we do experience snow every now and then. If temps drop down below freezing we head into the Airstream and turn on the furnace which in turn, keeps the Airstream and her pipes warm and from freezing. It is here where we love to spend our weekends and holidays with our Airstream. We can take our Airstream with us up to the mountain pass and literally have a ski-in and ski-out situation.

But from inside the trailer we had no idea — that is until we got into the truck and saw the outdoor temperature reading. We do travel with a full tank of water. While under tow, we keep the furnace set to 50 degrees — which means keeping the propane on because when you tow through cold weather — things get colder. This will keep the tanks warm. The furnace blows warm air onto the pipes keeping them warm and from freezing. Then when we arrive back at the Airstream, we turn the furnace up higher to around 65 degrees.

Now, with that said — there is an occasion where I will use an electric fan and that is when the temperatures outside are above freezing level — around 40 degrees or so. Never turn that off.
